【1】速度

 

①前面多用at。

【例】The cargo should be discharged at the average rate of 2 000 MT per weather working day.

应按照每晴天工作日2000公吨的平均速度卸货。

 

②at a [the] rate of... = at... 表示速度[速率]

【例】According to China’s State Economic Commission, the first half of last year witnessed light industry growing at 8.5 per cent and heavy industry at a [the] rate of 9.5 per cent.

据中国国家经济委员会统计，去年上半年轻工业增长8.5%，重工业增长9.5%。

 

【2】at any rate无论如何

 

【例】You had better consult your bankers, at any rate.

无论如何，你们与银行磋商一下为好。

 

【3】比率，费率

 

【例】The board of directors has agreed to cut down interest rates.

董事会已同意削减利率。

 

【4】价格

 

【例】We ask you to send us samples of tussah silk and quote best rates.

请你方寄来柞蚕丝的样品并报来最低价格。

 

【5】等级

 

多与序数词组成复合词作前置定语。

【例】The copper concentrates we have supplied is of first rate quality.

我方所供应的精铜砂是一级品。

【7】认为，列为

 

①【例】The First National Bank of Boston rates the agent as sound.

②现在分词用作句中状语。

【例】Rating you among our old friends, we have quoted you our best prices.

我们认为你方是老朋友[客户]，已报给你方最低的价格。

 

rather

【1】很，颇，有点

 

【例】Your price [quotation] is rather on the high side.

你方价格[报价]有点偏高。

 

【2】rather than而不是，而不愿

 

①rather than是连词，它前后两端所连接的词语应该词性一致（即语法结构相同）。

【例】Why would an advertising department or a credit department be considered staff (structure) rather than line structure?

为什么广告部门或信贷部门被认为是服务性机构而不是业务机构？

 

②than后接用选择中被否定的那一方面。

【例】We would rather have the small size than the large one.

我们宁可要小号的而不要大号的。
