Fruit Forward and Kid-Friendly Summer Snacks
Nicole Obre
I could live on fruit all summer long, and thankfully, my daughter seems to share my aversion to all things sweet and refreshing. Seriously, hand me a watermelon, a spoon, and I could call that breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But kids tend to resist eating the same thing over and over so I’m getting creative with my snacking ideas. Here are a few of my favourite fruit forward and kid-friendly summer snacks.
Fruit and Cheese Kabobs
My kid’s a big fan of anything she can eat off a stick. Simply load up a few wooden skewers with a combination of cheese cubes and fresh fruit and hand the tasty treats over. My favourite combo is marble cheddar with grapes and strawberries.
Yogurt Fruit Dip
A perfect complement to your fruit kabobs or any fresh fruit you like. Combine equal parts plain yogurt with softened cream cheese and whip until smooth. Add in a couple tablespoons of honey to taste and you’re ready to get dipping!
Fruit Pizza
An easy, breezy, and beautiful way to serve fruit. I like to use watermelon slices as my base and smaller cut pieces of fruit or mixed berries for the toppings. Creating your pizza with the kid’s help is half the fun.
Watermelon Popsicles
Step one: cut watermelon into triangles. Step two: put a popsicle stick into the rind. Step three: serve and enjoy.
Apple Nachos
It sounds weird, but trust me on this one. Use apple slices in place of tortilla chips, peanut butter and/or chocolate sauce in place of cheese, and throw on raisins, nuts, and coconut flakes for toppings. Create whatever flavour combination floats your boat.
Frozen Grapes
So simple, so refreshing, and no recipe needed. Bonus: these are awesome for teething babies and toddlers to chew on.
