Remarks by Ambassador Yan Xiusheng at the 2022 ‘Fish and Dragon Festival’

晚上好！很高兴与大家在云端相聚，共庆中国新春佳节。再过5天，中国农历虎年新春就要到来。在中国文化中，虎是勇敢和力量的象征，中国人常说生龙活虎、龙腾虎跃。我谨代表中国驻巴巴多斯大使馆给大家拜年，祝大家虎年虎跃新程、虎虎生威。这是中国驻巴巴多斯使馆与巴巴多斯中央银行一年一度共同举办的第8个鱼龙节。在此，我要特别感谢巴巴多斯央行的大力支持，感谢Aja Production和巴巴多斯艺术家的倾情投入。
Good evening! It is a great pleasure to get together with you all virtually to celebrate the advent of spring in the lunar new year, the Year of the Tiger, which will be in 5 days. In Chinese culture, tiger symbolizes bravery and strength, as the Chinese people often refer to spirited dragon and dynamic tiger, or soaring dragon and leaping tiger. On behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados, I would like to extend my New Year’s greetings to all of you, and wish you a auspicious, prosperous, healthy and happy Year of the Tiger. This is the 8th Fish and Dragon Festival jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy and the Central Bank of Barbados. I would like to express my special thanks to the Central Bank of Barbados for the always ready valuable support as well as Aja Production and Barbadian artists for their passionate dedication.
2021年，无论对巴巴多斯还是中国，都是注定载入史册的一年。中国全面建成小康社会，隆重庆祝中国共产党百年华诞，胜利召开党的十九届六中全会，全面总结党百年奋斗重大成就和历史经验，昂首阔步踏上全面建设社会主义现代化国家新征程。巴巴多斯在独立55周年之际走向共和，实现了1966年独立以来的长期夙愿，成为世界上最年轻的共和国。
The year 2021 went down in history as a critical year for both Barbados and China. China has completed the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects, solemnly celebrated CPC’s centenary, successfully convened the sixth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee which comprehensively reviewed the Party’s major achievements over the past century, and proudly embarked on a new journey towards a modern socialist country. Barbados meanwhile became a republic on its 55th anniversary of independence, fulfilling a long-cherished wish since independence in 1966 and became the youngest republic in the world.
2021年也是中巴关系取得重要进展的一年。去年7月13日，中国国家主席习近平应约同莫特利总理通电话，达成一系列重要共识，为中巴关系未来发展指明了方向。新冠肺炎疫情发生以来，中巴同舟共济、共克时艰。中国先后向巴巴多斯援助了3万剂新冠疫苗和14批急需的抗疫物资。朋友们，中国是最早承诺将新冠疫苗作为全球公共产品，最早支持疫苗知识产权豁免，最早同发展中国家开展疫苗生产合作，中国疫苗成为人民的疫苗、世界的疫苗、可及的疫苗。
2021 was also a year of important progress in China-Barbados relations. On July 13, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley, reaching a series of important consensus and charting the course for the future development of China-Barbados relations. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, China and Barbados have pulled together and jointly overcome the difficulties. China donated 30,000 Chinese vaccines and 14 batches of PPEs to Barbados. Dear friends, China is the first to commit to making the COVID-19 vaccine a global public good, the first to support vaccine intellectual property rights exemption, and the first to cooperate in vaccine production with developing countries. China’s vaccine has become the vaccine of the people, the vaccine of the world, and the vaccine accessible.
疫情从未阻断中巴深化友好合作。中国比亚迪公司生产的49台电动公交车在巴投入运营，使巴巴多斯成为加勒比拥有最大电动公交车的国家，短短1年减少了60万升柴油消耗，为巴巴多斯实现清洁能源目标、应对气候变化作出积极贡献。中国援建的粮食安全中心和希望农业培训学校即将动工，建成后将助力巴巴多斯提高农业产量、增加本土农产品供给。更不必说山姆罗德城堡酒店项目、西印度大学凯夫希尔校区孔子学院以及中国第5批援巴医疗队。
The friendly cooperation between China and Barbados has never been stopped by the pandemic. 49 electric buses produced by China’s BYD Company have already provided services to Barbadian people, making Barbados the country with the largest fleet of electric buses in the Eastern Caribbean, reducing diesel consumption by 600,000 liters in just one year, and contributing to Barbados’ clean energy mission and climate change response. The China-aided Food Security Center and Hope Agricultural Training School projects are about to start construction. After completion, they will help Barbados increase its capacity to cope with food security. Not to mention the Sam Lord’s Castle Hotel project, the Confucius Institute of the West Indies University, Cave Hill Campus and the 5th Chinese medical team.
2022年是中国进入全面建设社会主义现代化国家、向第二个百年奋斗目标进军新征程的重要一年，也是巴巴多斯走向共和的第一年。我们迎来了中巴建交45周年。再过一周，北京将举办冬奥会和冬残奥会。中方将继续本着“绿色、共享、开放、廉洁”的理念，给各国人民呈现一届简约、安全、精彩的奥运盛会。朋友们，面对当今挑战，只要各个国家、各个民族、各个种族之间相互理解与尊重，守望相助，齐心协力，就能渡过风雨，共创美好未来。最后，我想邀请大家听一听未来的声音——来自中巴友好学校麓山小学和布鲁姆小学的孩子们对2022年的憧憬和希望。祝大家新春快乐，虎年吉祥！
2022 is an important year for China to embark on a new journey to build a modern socialist country in all respects and to realize the Second Centenary Goal. 2022 is also an important year for Barbados as it is the first year of Barbados being a republic. We will also usher in the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Barbados. Just in a week, Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, a streamlined, safe and splendid Games will be presented to people of all countries. Dear Friends, facing the challenges of the times, as long as all countries, all nations and all races understand each other, respect each other, work together, pull together and stand together, the bright future is there ahead of us. And we will be there, together. Finally, I would like to invite everyone to listen to the voice of the future - the vision and hope of the children from Lushan Primary School and Charles F. Broome Primary School, which have established friendly school relations last year. Again I wish you all a Happy Chinese New Year and auspicious Year of the Tiger!
