Remarks by Ambassador Wang Xiaolong at the Reception Celebrating the 73rd Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China

Ladies and Gentlemen,

非常感谢各位出席今天的招待会，与我们共同庆祝中华人民共和国成立73周年。

It’s a great pleasure to have so many friends joining us this evening to celebrate the 73rd Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

虽然在中华民族悠久的历史长河中，73年只是短暂一瞬，但新中国成立73年来，在中国共产党的领导下，全体中国人民顽强奋斗，推动国家、人民、民族的面貌发生了翻天覆地的变化，使得这73年成为中华民族发展史上最华丽的篇章。特别是近十年来，中国取得了很多极不寻常、极不平凡的发展成就，在中华民族发展史上具有里程碑意义。

In the long history of China, 73 years is but a brief episode. In those 73 years since the founding of the PRC, however, the country, the people and the nation have all undergone profound transformations through the hard work of the Chinese people under the leadership of the CPC, making the episode one of the most magnificent in the history of the nation. In particular, the extraordinary achievements in the last decade stand out as a major milestone.

73年来，中国人民的获得感、幸福感、安全感不断提升，千百年来困扰中华民族的绝对贫困问题历史性地画上句号。人均GDP从新中国成立初期的约53美元，增长到2021年的12551美元，形成了全球规模最大、最具成长性的中等收入群体，在中华大地上全面建成了小康社会。面对突如其来的新冠肺炎疫情，中国坚持人民至上、生命至上，科学动态调整疫情防控策略，既最大限度保护了人民生命安全和身体健康，也保持了经济社会健康稳定发展。

Over the past 73 years, the sense of fulfillment, happiness and security of Chinese people has notably improved and absolute poverty, which has plagued the Chinese nation for centuries has come to a historic end. GDP per capita soared from US$53 in the early 1950s to US$12551 in 2021, creating the world’s largest and most promising middle-income community, bringing us past the goal post of building a Xiaokang or moderately prosperous society in all respects. In the face of unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID-19, China puts people’s life and health front and centre and has kept optimizing our response measures in light of the evolving situation, so that we have successfully protected people’s life and health and at the same time, ensured sustained, sound and steady socioeconomic development to the maximum extent possible.

73年来，中国经济社会发展水平和综合国力大幅提升，迎来了从站起来、富起来到强起来的历史性飞跃。近十年，中国经济实力跃上新台阶，经济总量由2012年的53.9万亿元上升到2021年的114.4万亿元，翻了一番多，占世界经济比重从11.3%上升到超过18%。中国已成为世界第二大经济体、第一大货物贸易国、第二大消费市场，构建起完整的经济体系和强大的经济韧性。中国秉持创新、协调、绿色、开放、共享的新发展理念，正在加快迈向更高质量、更有效率、更加公平、更可持续、更为安全的发展之路。

Over the past 73 years, overall national strength of the country has seen unprecedented increases. In that process, the Chinese nation has made the leap from standing up from prostration to standing tall in the family of nations. Taking the past decade for instance, China’s GDP has more than doubled from 53.9 trillion RMB in 2012 to 114.4 trillion RMB in 2021, and its share in the world economy has grown from 11.3% to more than 18%. China has become the world’s second-largest economy, the largest trader of goods, and the second largest consumer market underpinned by a well-rounded and resilient economic system. Applying a new paradigm featuring innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development, China is accelerating its transition toward a higher quality, more efficient, more equitable, more sustainable and safer development pathway.

73年来，中国在与世界的联系互动中发展。中国奉行独立自主的和平外交政策，高举和平、发展、合作、共赢旗帜，积极倡导构建人类命运共同体，推动共建“一带一路”，提出全球发展倡议和全球安全倡议，始终做世界和平的建设者、全球发展的贡献者、国际秩序的维护者。进入新发展阶段，中国将继续坚持改革开放，持续与世界分享中国发展机遇和红利。

Over the past 73 years, China has maintained close interactions with the rest of the world. China pursues an independent foreign policy of peace and holds high the banners of peace, development and win-win cooperation. By advocating the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and putting forward the “Belt and Road” Initiative, the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, China has been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order. Going into the next stage of our development, China remains committed to reform and opening up and will continue to share its development opportunities and dividends with the world.

73年来，中国人民在中国共产党的领导下走出了一条中国式现代化道路。这条道路是根据中国幅员辽阔、人口规模巨大的多民族发展中国家国情，独立自主选择的道路；是一切为了人民的道路；是人与自然和谐共生的道路；也是中国深度融入世界、为世界和平与发展作出中国贡献的道路。展望未来，中国共产党和中国人民也将在这条道路上继续坚定不移、充满信心地走下去。

Over the past 73 years, the Chinese people have pioneered a unique path to modernization under the leadership of the CPC. It is a path chosen independently by the Chinese people based on the country’s conditions as a multi-ethnic developing country with a vast territory and a large population. It is a path of putting people first and seeking harmonious coexistence between man and nature. It is also a path whereby China will integrate deeply into the world and make more contributions in its own way to global peace and development. Looking forward, the CPC and the Chinese people will advance down this path steadfastly and with full confidence.

下个月，我们即将召开中国共产党第二十次全国代表大会，这次大会将规划中国未来5年、10年甚至更长时间的发展蓝图，将成为中国发展历史上一个新的重要里程碑。中国将继续把国家和民族发展放在自己力量的基点上，探索适合自身国情的高质量发展道路，更好满足人民对美好生活的追求，坚决维护自身主权、安全、发展利益，努力实现国家的早日和平统一。同时，中国也将继续站在历史正确的一边、站在人类进步的一边，为携手应对人类共同挑战贡献中国智慧、中国方案、中国力量，为推动构建更加美好的人类命运共同体而不懈努力。

As many of you are aware, the 20th National Congress of the CPC will be held next month, which will draw up a new blueprint for China’s development for the next 5 to 10 years and beyond. The congress will undoubtedly become a new major milestone in China’s history of development. China will continue to rely essentially on our own strength for the high-quality development of the country, pursue a development path suited to our own national realities to meet the people’s aspirations for a better life, safeguard resolutely its sovereignty, security and development interests, and endeavour to realize the early, peaceful reunification of the country. At the same time, China will continue to stand on the right side of history and on the side of progress of humanity, contributing China’s proposals, ideas and efforts to address the common challenges facing the international community and make unremitting efforts to jointly build the community with a brighter shared future for mankind.

女士们，先生们，

Ladies and Gentlemen,

独立自主、人民至上、热爱和平、绿色发展、开放包容，这些都是中新两国政府和人民所秉持的共同理念。在相通的底层信念的指引下，中新两国始终坚持相互尊重、相互理解、互利共赢，推动双边关系不断向前发展。

Independence, centrality of people, commitment to peace and sustainable development, openness and inclusiveness, are the common beliefs held by both the Chinese and New Zealand governments and people. Guided by these shared convictions, China and New Zealand have adhered to the principles of mutual respect, mutual understanding, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation in an evolving partnership.

今年是中新建交50周年，这是双边关系发展的重要里程碑，有着承前启后、继往开来的重要意义。回望过去的50年，在两国领导人战略指引下，双方政治互信不断深化，各层级各领域交流频密深入，务实合作日益扩大，人民友谊不断巩固，为两国全面战略伙伴关系不断注入新的内涵。中新各界发扬“争先”精神，跨越政治、历史、文化和发展阶段等差异，推动双边合作开创了多个“第一”，给两国人民带来实实在在的利益，也为维护国际和地区和平稳定作出积极贡献。

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and New Zealand, which is not only a significant milestone but also an important opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made together and chart the course for the future. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries, the past half-century has witnessed deepening political trust, frequent and in-depth exchanges at all levels across all fields, expanding practical cooperation, and consolidated friendship, which has given increasing substance to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our two countries. People from all walks of life in both countries have worked closely together in the spirit of “striving to be the first” and have created many “firsts” in China’s relations with western developed countries, irrespective of differences in culture and history, political system, and level of development, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples and at the same time, making a positive contribution to the peace and development in the region and the wider world.

中国一直以来将新西兰视为真诚朋友和重要伙伴，对两国关系发展前景充满期望，也充满信心。面向未来，中方愿与新方继续坚持相互尊重、相互理解、互利共赢，以过去半个世纪我们一同付出的努力和取得的成就为新的起点，在复杂多变的国际形势中，携手挖掘合作潜力，将伙伴关系推向新的高度。我坚信，我们不仅将共同创造中新关系更加美好的明天，更将为推动人类发展进步事业作出更大贡献。

China regards New Zealand as a valued friend and partner and believes in a bright future for our bilateral relations. Going forward, China is ready to join hands with New Zealand on the basis of mutual respect, mutual understanding and mutual benefit, to navigate the complex changes taking place in the world, build on what we have achieved and break new ground to unleash the potential for our cooperation and take the partnership between us to new heights. With this, I firmly believe we will not only create a better future for China-New Zealand relations, but also make a greater contribution to the noble cause of the progress of humankind.
