Syncope
A term used in comparative philology, and sometimes in modern phonology, to refer to the deletion of a vowel within a word; often contrasted with aphaeresis and apocope. Examples include the modern British English pronunciations of such words as secretary /'sekrɪtri/, where American English has /'sekrɪteri/. Some authors extend the notion to include internal consonant deletion.
