Wide
A term used in the description of types of vowel, referring to a vowel which is articulated with greater pharynx width than another with the same tongue and lip configuration; it is opposed to narrow. The effect is achieved by drawing the root of the tongue forward and lowering the larynx. Twi and Akan (West Africa) use a contrast of this kind.
