【1】（金钱等）欠而未付的

 

①用作后置定语。

【例】As the amount owing is considerably overdue, we shall be grateful to receive your cheque by return.

欠款长期拖欠未付，如蒙迅速寄来支票则非常感谢。

 

②后置定语owing可接用to sb或by sb。

【例】There’s a great deal of money owing to us on these overdue accounts.

在这些逾期未付的账目中，外面欠我们的钱很多。

 

③可用作表语。

【例】As this sum has been owing for 5 months, we should be grateful if you now settle the account.

由于这笔款已5个月未付，若蒙现在结账则不胜感激。

 

【2】owing to由于

 

①用作状语

【例】Owing to the increasing demand for this type of our products, our stocks have run very low.

由于对这种产品的需求日益增长，我方存货已不甚多。

 

②用作表语、定语等形容词性的短语。

【例】The delay in delivery was largely owing to the fact that the end-users had not given detailed specifications of the machines.

延迟交货主要是由于用户没有送来机器的详细规格。

 

own

【1】自己的

 

加在代词所有格后面，用以强调语气。

【例】I signed the contract with my own hand.

我亲手签订了那份合同。

 

【2】of one’s own自己所有的

 

【例】The United States is a major consumer of coffee, yet it does not have the climate to grow any of its own.

美国是咖啡的主要消费国，可是美国的气候并不适合自己种植咖啡。

 

【3】承认

 

【例】We wish to own [acknowledge] receipt of your letter of July 20.

7月20日来信收悉。

注：这种用法，目前已不多见。

 

【4】拥有，占有

 

【例】Party A grants unto Party B an exclusive licence to manufacture in such plants as the latter may hereafter own or lease.

甲方授予乙方在今后占有或租用工厂内独家制造的特权。

所有人，物主，船东

 

【例】We understand from the (ship) owners that the vessel will not arrive until Monday.

我们从船行得知该轮星期一以后方可到达。
